History

Inauguration of the Hotel "Ukraine" (former "Moskva") took place on September 28, 1961. The first in Kyiv high-rise structure was built according to the project of corporate authors of the architects A. V. Dobrovolskyi (head), B. I. Pryimak, V. A. Sozanskyi, A. M. Miletskyi, A. Ya. Kosenko, engineering designer O. M. Pechenov and L. Ye. Linovych.

The hotel was built in the central part of Kiev and located on the historic territory known from old times as Ivanovskiy way. The street was laid in the 19th century and at first it was called Ivanovskaya, then Begichevskaya after general Begichev, who had the large manor. In 1842 the street was called Institutskaya in connection with building of Institute of for Noble Maidens in 1836-1842, which due to its social and architectural significance was an important phenomenon in life of Kiev. Current name of the building is "Oktiabrskiy Palace".

In the second half of the 19th century almost the whole hill, on which the Hotel stands now, was occupied by the manor of architect Beretti, which after his death was divided between his heirs, and later sold to other people. Institutskaya Street was developed intensely in the second half of the 19th – at the beginning of the 20th century. Land plots in this part of the city become one of the most expensive ones in Kiev.

In 1912 on this place the first in one-storeyed Kiev tower-block was built. On the own land plot Kiev building contractor Lev Borisovich Ginsburg built 11-storeyed house that immediately was called "skyscraper of Ginsburg". In this commercial apartment building there were 94 big flats and stores on the ground floor. In the depth of the land plot there was 2-storeyed residence of Lev Borisovich. The manor and skyscraper did not remain. They were destroyed together with the whole central part of the city in September 1941 during Second World War.

In after-war period reconstruction, and more exactly creation of new Khreschatik began. According to development project the street was extended almost for 100 meters. Simultaneously building of multistoried residential and administrative buildings, among which construction of the hotel was planned, began. Thus, in 1953 the order of Soviet of Ministers of USSR, according to which project works of construction of multistoreyed hotel at Khreschatik Str., was issued. In 1954 construction works began.

Since the moment of inauguration hundred thousands of guests of Kiev used and use services of the Hotel. Here the influential politicians, prominent sportsmen, famous businessmen, actors, cosmonauts, pop stars, diplomats, musicians and artists of Ukraine and foreign countries stay here often. Return to our hotel is a good sign, moreover that here we are waiting and welcome guests with Ukrainian hospitability and European sophistication.
